1977…wow, that’s a long time ago. This is one of the very first poems I wrote of which I was proud to share. I wrote it when I was a senior in high school. The impetus? I honestly don’t remember, except that it seems I was imagining the flowers to be alive. It was the start of my whimsical voice. I will say that the rhyming happened naturally, it wasn’t contrived or forced….sometimes my head does that, as it did in my poem Quietness.
SPRING FANTASY
On a spring like day,
I spied some flowers dancing.
So prettily they would sway,
like ballerinas prancing.
They looked as if they danced on air,
wearing pretty pastel dresses.
Little maidens, sweet and fair,
with long and golden tresses.
I watched them dance for quite a while,
so easily and so free.
But alas! They heard me smile,
and their dancing ceased to be.
